How to restore parquet do it yourself: surface restoration technology (video)

Even with careful treatment and regular care, there comes a time when the individual boards of the parquet floor loosen and gaps form between them, and scratches and scuffs appear on the lacquer surface. At the first signs of the appearance of instability of the coating and a significant change in its appearance, it is worth considering how to restore the parquet to prevent deterioration of its condition before the need for a complete replacement of the floor.

Types of damage to parquet

The famous durability of this natural wood flooring depends largely on the initial quality of the work done on its installation. If the assembly of parquet strips was done with violation of the technology on an insufficiently even basis, it may be that the restoration of the parquet without leveling the base will be ineffective.

Most often, destabilization of the coating elements occurs due to desiccation of the planks, the wood of which was deformed under the influence of climatic factors. Deformation of the slats may also occur due to the ingress of large amounts of water. This not only leads to swelling on the floor surface, but also provokes the beginning of the process of rotting wood and the formation of mold.

Mechanical damage to the parquet can include cracks, scratches and all sorts of defects caused by dropping weights, pressure from the legs and wheels of furniture or coarse soles or metal shoes. The varnish and oil coating protects the floor from abrasion, but over time the layer becomes thinner, stains and darkening of the wood appear.

If the maintenance of the coating is not carried out with the necessary regularity, this can lead to the restoration of the parquet much earlier than the due date or the need for its complete dismantling and replacement.

How to restore parquet?

Floor restoration work begins with a thorough examination of the floor to identify the main damages to be repaired.

This will allow you to make a list of tools and materials necessary for restoring the parquet:

• scraper or manual cycle;
• abrasive paper;
• chisel;
• parquet strips for replacement;
• wooden slats;
• rubber hammer;
• parquet putty;
• bituminous mastic ;
• sealing primer;
• parquet lacquer or oil;
• wide brush or roller.

Parquet restoration, which has only minor surface defects and is stable, is performed using cosmetic procedures. They consist in treating cracks and scratches by putty. Sometimes for this purpose it is enough to use a special repairing pencil available on the market. More serious problems require the use of small, but effort.

If during the inspection it turned out that some of the dies had completely lost their shape or rotted, then they would have to be restored by replacement. The removal of damaged plates should be extremely accurate so that the process does not damage the adjacent whole areas.

For this, the chisel begins to break the bar from the center, gradually splitting and removing its parts. Then clean the base of the traces of the old mastic and level the prepared place. New dies are glued with any kind of mastic on a waterless basis, usually silicone or bituminous. Top load is laid to the complete drying of the adhesive mass, and then make scraping, polishing and varnishing.

The technology of restoring the parquet, the slats of which have cracked and formed gaps between them, depends on the distance between them. It is enough to process small intervals with special parquet putty. Wider gaps are eliminated by warming the desired area with a regular hairdryer. This warms up the old mastic and allows you to seal the planks as much as possible, tamping them with light blows of a rubber hammer.

As a result, 1 wide slit is formed into which a part of thin slats or wood chips is placed, ensuring that it does not protrude above the level of the parquet. The same method will help eliminate the creaking of individual slats. Pins of wood are inserted between them, adjusting their size so as to create a lot of pressure on adjacent boards. Pre-slit grease glue, and the excess of the insert is subsequently cut. Then carry out the putty and further work on grinding and processing.

Scraping parquet

If there are sufficient financial resources for this procedure, it is better to invite a specialist.Handling a cycle machine requires skills and abilities, and without experience of such work you can spoil it completely instead of returning to the floor of beauty. You can use the manual scraping method for the restoration, but it is suitable only for people who have a lot of free time, patience and diligence.

A "manual cycle" is used for this. This tool is a wooden handle with a blade fixed in it. With its help the top thin layer of wood is removed. Uniform movement and force of pressing on the cycle provide smoothness and accuracy of the surface.

In the process, you need to regularly undercut the cutting part for high-quality chip removal. The first step of cycling is rough handling. After it, there are many shortcomings that are eliminated with sandpaper. Cleaning should be carried out in several stages and in 2 directions, transverse and longitudinal, each time using a thinner skin.

A cleaned and sanded surface is cleaned from sawdust and debris with a vacuum cleaner and proceeds to the final stage of restoration - priming and varnishing. The soil is applied in order to reduce the amount of varnish that the wood will absorb. After complete drying of the soil, you can begin varnishing.

Before applying the 2nd coat of lacquering, it is advisable to do another, intermediate sanding of the coating. It will help remove dust and lint adhering to the surface and strengthen the adhesion to the second layer of lacquer.
